Block Island

25 Jul

This is one of two lighthouses on the island, which we arrived at just a half hour before the ferry left for the mainland.  In otherwords, we literally had 15 minutes to see the place. haha

South Lighthouse - Block Island

South Lighthouse – Block Island

The structure has quite a history – it was built in 1874 and at one point, it had to be moved back from the cliffs because (due to erosion) it was going to tumble into the ocean!  Safely tucked back from the edge now, it continues to stand solidly, keeping watch over the rocky bluffs.  You can read up on the lighthouse here.

If you ever have a chance to visit Block Island, don’t hesitate.  Do it!

1993, I believe. I actually remember going there while they were prepping for the move. It was impressive. 🙂

Agreed! I’m not a particularly good student of history, but I do have lots of respect for it. I’m glad they were able to preserve the building. 🙂
