I go to seek a great perhaps.
That kind of sums up an adventure, doesn’t it? Last weekend we took a road trip to upstate N.Y. because I found a photo online of a 215ft waterfall that looked impressive. We spent 5hrs in a car, each way, for a place that on the whole probably wasn’t going to offer many good vantage points for images.
But then again, maybe it would. Maybe it needed to be explored. Maybe it needed to be worked at. Maybe… Well, maybe’s are intriguing…so we went.
Taughannock Falls are pretty awesome. The gorge trail was closed (probably for the best…ice and cliffs don’t mix well), and the rim trails offered limited views…but the overlook was so damn pretty. The light was Narnia level magical.
And as a bonus, that area is loaded with cliffs, gorges and waterfalls. There was so much to see, we are obviously going back when it warms up.
Why, you ask?
Because… Ithaca is gorges.
Hahaha (yes, that really is their slogan. It’s my kind of place!)
I appreciate that you drove 5 hours for a great view of a waterfall. We are a lot alike.
Life should be filled with experiences. I want mine to overflow with great memories instead of regrets, so I usually end up saying something like, “why not?” and hitting the road. Lol
That’s a great way to live. With young kids it’s hard work, but so worth it. Too easy to get caught up in routine and live a very safe (boring) life.
Lol that’s the truth. And I know my parents and grandparents always took the kids on road trips even at a young age. Its tough, but possible and the impact on the children’s life (mine, my parents) was immense!
I love the photo, so I think the drive was worth it!
Thanks so much, Rumpy! š it was definitely a fun weekend. No regrets!
Oh, nice. I can see driving 5 hours for something like this!

Well, this, among other great hikes, gorges, and…um…girls weekend stuff. (Fancy restaurants and tasty drinks Lol) š
Stunning!
Thanks so much!
What a magical photo… and it sounds like an enjoyable trip, as well. Though I’d struggle with a 5 hr road trip, given my hinky back…
I hear ya on back problems! For most part, I am able to manage my damaged discs with exercise and PT, but when it’s acting up, long car rides are a lot less enjoyable.
What an AMAZING capture – what a wonderful reward for a 5-hour road trip there! š
I agree 100%! Good photos always make me feel like the effort was worth it. š
Yeah, it was worth it! Winter–waterfall–great aura of mysticism there! Thanks for sharing.
But the idea of driving five hours out and five hours again back–mind my next comment lightly–from an American expatriate–something quite American about 10 hours of driving–being acceptable–it is something I grew up with–thoroughly enjoyed and sometimes miss–that great space inside the car on the way to a strange place–lower Michigan to upper Michigan for example–but I never captured a photo as well as you have!
Lol the drive is actually my least favorite part, but until we develop a way to teleport, alas, it’s the most affordable way to explore!
An absolutely beautiful photo. Makes me want to go there.
You should! There is a lot of nice hiking and waterfall photo ops in the area. š
